Field Research: Island of Rab

Comments Off on Field Research: Island of Rab

The participants of the GLOHUM project, led by project coordinator Prof. Miljenko Jurković, conducted field research of the architectural and sculptural heritage on the island of Rab, Croatia, from September 20th to October 4th, 2020.

The work included comprehensive research of the island’s terrain with the main objective to study the transformation of the historical landscape from the Roman period to the end of the Middle Ages. The focus of the campaign was on the remaining architectural heritage, while one team conducted the research and the documentation of the valuable stone sculpture scattered through the island (Lapidarium in the town of Rab, Monastery of St. Euphemia, private properties). The covered area included the perimeter of the town of Rab as a single urban center on the island, Banjol, Barbat, Valmartina, Mundanije, Supetarska draga, Kampor and Kalifront. The campaign also included archaeological research of the so-called “Gožinka” site, a heavily forested area with the hidden remains of a Roman villa and an Early Christian church that underwent an extensive transformation of the interior during the Early Middle Ages. The site has given us yet another new example of the continuation of the functioning of the elites through the centuries, directly linking the Roman, Late Antique, and Early Medieval cultural and social practices together.

The sites, architecture, terrain and sculpture have all been documented using state-of-the-art 3D technology (Structure from Motion and Structured Light 3D scanning), UAV aerial survey and GNSS positioning, which ensures the future relevance of all the data acquired.
